Frequently Asked Questions
Why train with us? Our instructor has 12 years of CDL experience and 3 years instructional experience. We believe hands-on training beyond the bare minimum to pass the CDL exam is crucial to your success in obtaining your CDL as well as your confidence on the road. Our flexible training schedule is ideal for individuals who do not want to leave their current job as well as students who wish to train as much as possible in a short time and get their CDL as soon as possible. Our director is available during the day to answer questions and guide you through the program.
How quickly can you get your CDL? The classroom component can be completed in just a few sessions, at your own pace - knock it out in a couple of sittings, or take your time. The in-person training can be completed in as little as 3 weeks, or you can take as long as 6 months once you have your CDL learning permit - it will be up to you and your availability to complete the training hours.
Why is the first part of the training online? In February, 2022, a law was passed that required all truck driving schools to meet certain educational requirements called Entry Level Driver Training before obtaining their commercial learner’s permit. The online model allows you to complete this requirement at your own pace. You will have the support of our team if you have any questions as you complete your coursework.
Is this a paid apprenticeship or internship? No. We are a TWC approved career school. We do not pay our students nor provide job placement. We recommend getting a day job (if you do not already have one) to get you through the training period until you can find your first driving job! That is why our schedule is set to accommodate individuals who are currently working.
How much is tuition? Enrollment in our school will cost a total of $2700: $100 enrollment fee up front to start the online training component, and the remaining $2600 to start the in-person training. You won't be expected to pay anything else unless you decide to purchase additional road practice hours or need additional CDL exam attempts. There is no application fee.
Are there any discounts? We provide a $200 discount if you schedule your final CDL exam at the DPS on a group testing day, that is more than one student is schedule to test that day. We will provide testing dates after your enrollment starts.
How to contact support: Email us at director@huffmancdlacademy.com, we will reply within 24 hours. Call us at 713-306-3165 between 9am and 5pm, and if we are not available immediately, we will return calls the same day or next business day if the call is received after 5pm. Or if you are ready to get started, schedule a tour!
Do you offer an externship or work experience? No.
What is the program structure? 5 units of online classroom training, after which you will take exams to obtain your CDL learners permit. Then, up to 40 hours of in person training will be completed with our instructor to cover pre-trip inspection, equipment education, and driving practice. After you have completed these hours and are comfortable, you'll sign up for your CDL exam!
What is the schedule for in person training? We are here to instruct you Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 6-9pm and Saturdays 8am-5pm. To keep our capacity legal, we will require students to sign up for class days. When you sign up for a class day, you must attend the entire class so your hours may be logged accurately. We will not require you to attend all 5 days each week, but will encourage you to do so to receive your CDL in a timely manner. You can complete your hours in about 2.5 weeks if you attend all available classes.
What is included in the price? Your tuition includes access to our online coursework, 40 hours of in-person pre-trip, equipment education, and road practice, and one CDL exam attempt. Additional hands on practice and CDL exam attempts can be purchased separately. You will also have the support of our team throughout your enrollment: technical assistance for the online coursework, scheduling your in-person hours, and supporting you through completion of the program.
Do you offer financial assistance? Not at this time, no.
Do you guarantee job placement? No. Like any college, career school, or trade school, there is no employment guarantee.
What job opportunities are there with a CDL? Apart from the jobs you may be familiar with like over the road truck driving, there are less-known opportunities like in-town freight for fulfillment companies (think FedEx, Amazon), hotshot, Teamsters, and more!
